Wildcats Fall 4-1 Despite Strong Outing From Tyler Arella

Box Score PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – Villanova (12-8 overall, 0-6 BIG EAST) dropped the weekend series finale 4-1 to Seton Hall (13-13 overall, 6-1 BIG EAST) on Sunday afternoon despite a terrific start from Tyler Arella (East Northport, N.Y.). The southpaw tossed 5.2 innings while surrendering one run, five hits, and tallying three strikeouts.

Villanova took an aggressive, yet disciplined approach into the box early. In the bottom of the second inning, Pat O'Neill (Eagleville, Pa.) ripped a single into center field and capitalized on a Pirates error to take second base on the same play. Dylan McNary (Jefferson, Mass.) and Will Reiner (Madison, Conn.) drew consecutive walks to load the bases before AJ Hansen (Collegeville, Pa.) earned a walk to plate the first run of the game.

Following the early run support, Arella would cruise through the next three innings giving up weak contact. The senior allowed three hits over those innings, and two of those were infield singles. Seton Hall managed to even the score in the fifth inning after a one-out bunt single. A groundout would advance the runner to second with two outs before Steve Grober singled down the left field line tying the score.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Pirates gained the lead after plating two runs on one hit. Seton Hall stayed patient and worked three walks in the inning and capitalized with a two RBI single. The Pirates would add an insurance run in the eighth, but the damage had been done.

The Wildcats tallied four hits on the afternoon between Chris Rotondo (Redding, Conn), Pat O'Neill, Dylan McNary, and Jeff Manto (Bristol, Pa.). Danny Wilkinson (Scotch Plains, N.J.) notched his 11th appearance on the season while Cameron Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) faced one batter and picked up a strikeout.

David Festa picked up the win for Seton Hall after throwing six innings and giving up one run. The Pirates received multi-hit performances from Devin Hack, Matt Toke, and Will Gale.

Villanova will return to the diamond on Friday, Apr. 23 when they travel to Butler for a four-game weekend series. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Be sure to follow @VUBaseball on Twitter and @villanovabaseball on Instagram for updates throughout the season.
