Field Hockey Downs Bucknell 3-1

Conshohocken, Pa. – The Wildcats (2-1) returned home this weekend, defeating Bucknell (1-2) 3-1 behind a strong attack from the first minute of the match.

"I was happy with how we rebounded from last Sunday's game," said head coach Joanie Milhous. "We didn't put our best foot forward in the first half of that game and dug ourselves into a deep hole," she continued.

Sophomore forward Meghan Mitchell got the scoring started for Villanova at the 7:15 mark of the first quarter. Fellow classmate Amanda Middleman dribbled around the goalie and set Mitchell up for an easy goal, her first of the season. Mitchell was the team's leading point scorer last season finishing with 20 (9 goals, 2 assists) as a freshman.

Following Mitchell's lead was another sophomore, Sabine de Ruijter, who scored off a set piece from a penalty corner. Senior Katie Capalbo and junior Caitlin Van Goeverden assisted de Ruijter. Van Goeverden has now scored a point in each of the Wildcats first three games.

Freshman Anne Drabbe scored her first collegiate goal during the match.

Milhous was equally impressed with the team's defensive performance, stating "the past few days we had really worked on our defensive positioning and tactics. Our defense stepped up and led the way through the entirety of the game."

Leading the defensive stand was senior goalkeeper Jordan McGinley, posting a season high five saves and a .833 save percentage.

The Wildcats will conclude the two-game homestand on Sunday, hosting VCU (0-1) at noon.
