Box Score VILLANOVA, Pa. – After making record book moves in the first game of Sunday,
Kaysie Stuba took over yet another list, scoring six goals to move into first on the single-season goals ledger as Villanova fell to No. 25 Marist, 13-12, in a double-overtime thriller.
Stuba has scored 87 goals this season for Villanova (17-13, 6-5 MAAC, pushing her just shy of third place on the career goals list, currently at 246 in her time as a Wildcat. The senior attempted 14 shots on the day. Another senior moving up record books lists in the loss was
Amanda Rice, now tied for first for blocks in a season with 23 after recording two.
The Wildcats fought back in the second half to force Marist (21-11, 8-2 MAAC) into extra time. It was the second time this season that the Wildcats needed overtime action to determine an outcome.
Villanova jumped out to a 3-0 lead early thanks to a powerplay goal from
Stella Byles and two from
Joia McKinney. The Red Foxes answered with a run of their own, moving the net three times to even the score 3-3 through the first eight minutes.
The scoring run continued for Marist into the second period with Shannon Connelly and Victoria Padilla pushing their side's lead out to 5-3. Stuba netted two within a minute to get the 'Cats within a goal with 2:13 left in the half but Marist scored two late for an 8-5 score at the break.
Marist opened the second half with a goal nearly 45 seconds in from Myriam Lizotte. Stuba and Rice bookended a Red Fox goal with just over two minutes left in the third. Kathryn McCullough was called for a penalty in the final minute, allowing Stuba to convert a penalty shot for her fourth goal of the day, cutting into the Marist lead, 10-8.
The comeback bid kicked into gear in the fourth. Stuba and
Allie Hansen opened the run with back-to-back advantage goals to tie the game at 10 before Madeline Schultz put Marist back ahead by one nearly two minutes into the quarter. Playing a player-up,
Isabel Herbst connected on a chance to once again tie the contest but it was Stuba who put the Wildcats back in the lead for the first time since the first quarter, scoring with 2:16 on the clock and forcing Marist into a timeout. Viktoria Orlova provided a last-minute goal for the Red Foxes, forcing overtime.
Neither side could make a break in the first overtime period, forcing the contest into a second overtime. With 2:18 left in the period, Stuba was whistled for an exclusion, giving the Red Foxes a chance to go ahead. Lizotte scored the penalty attempt, giving Marist the final lead it needed.
As a whole, Villanova scored 12 goals on 36 shot attempts with Byles and Stuba combining for 20 shots. Rice had a four-point day, adding three assists to her lone goal. Byles and Rice both stole the ball four times each.
Sarah Shaw started in net for the 'Cats for a second straight game, making 14 saves and tallying an assist and a steal.
Villanova is home again next Saturday, hosting Wagner and Iona before going to La Salle on Sunday.
