Lockdown defense leads Villanova over Iona

The Wildcats allowed just one goal in each of the last three periods

Box Score VILLANOVA, Pa. – Villanova allowed just three goals in three periods of action on Saturday afternoon as the defense shined in an 8-6 victory over Iona at the Villanova Swim Complex.

The Villanova (18-14, 7-6 MAAC) tallied nine field blocks, matching the season-high set in the 19-18 win over Iona (14-12, 5-6 MAAC) back on March 20.

Senior Amanda Rice matched her season-high for field blocks with four in the win. Emily Morrissey and Kaysie Stuba each added two, as well.

Allie Hansen had a big scoring day, leading the team with four points on a powerplay goal and three assists. Five of Villanova's eight goals came with a 6-5 player advantage. Stuba had three points herself with two goals and an assist.

Between the posts, Sarah Shaw played a complete game for the third time this season. The goalie made eight saves.

The Gaels led through the first period, 3-2, forcing the Wildcats to go into comeback mode ahead of the break. Villanova added a pair of goals in the second while holding Iona to one, tying the contest at 4-4 at halftime.

Villanova outscored the Gaels 3-1 in the third to create some distance at 7-5 before each side netted a look in the fourth.

Sunday brings a short trip into Philadelphia for the 'Cats as they take on La Salle at 1 p.m. at the Kirk Pool.
