Roschell Clayton Breaks Absolute School Record in High Jump at Eagle Elite Invitational

Villanova senior cleared the bar at 1.88 meters to ascend to top spot in program’s all-time record book

BOSTON, Mass.—Senior high jumper Roschell Clayton (Montego Bay, Jamaica) has produced a record-setting performance in all three of her competitions to start the 2024 indoor season. The latest effort is the best one yet for Clayton, who became Villanova's absolute school record holder in the high jump with a mark of 1.88 meters (6-2) on Saturday morning. Clayton had previously tied and broken the Wildcats indoor record in her signature event before setting a new outright school record during the Eagle Elite Invitational at the TRACK at new balance.

Clayton recorded successful attempts at 1.77 meters and 1.80 meters to start Saturday's competition and was already the event winner out of 15 athletes after her second jump of the day. The bar then moved to 1.86 meters (6-1 ¼), one centimeter higher than Clayton's existing lifetime best and indoor school record which she had established at Penn State last month. She made it over at 1.86 meters on her first attempt, then set her sights at 1.88 meters which no previous Villanova athlete had cleared.

After a miss on her first try at the new record height, Clayton made it over on her second jump to take sole possession of the top spot in the Wildcats record book. Her former teammate, Sanaä Barnes, had jumped 1.87 meters at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in June 2021 and had cleared 1.86 meters during the collegiate season at the outdoor BIG EAST Championships in May 2022. Clayton's record-breaking performance on Saturday also lifted her into a tie for sixth place on this season's national performance list in the high jump. She was a second team All-American in the event outdoors last year.

Clayton and first year teammate Malaika Cunningham (St. Andrew, Jamaica) tallied a 1-2 finish in the high jump. Cunningham recorded a personal best jump of 1.77 meters which is second in the BIG EAST to Clayton this season. In the third competition of her collegiate career, Cunningham registered four straight successful jumps at heights ranging from 1.66 meters to 1.77 meters before she was eliminated following three tries at 1.80 meters.

Junior distance runner Margaret Carroll (Mount Wolf, Pa.) and first year collegian Tilly O'Connor (Spring Lake, N.J.) each ran the 3000 meters after running the mile on Friday afternoon. Carroll recorded a personal best time of 9:37.47 in Saturday's race and O'Connor crossed the finish line in 10:09.32.

The final event of the meet was the 4x400 meter relay in which the Wildcats posted a time of 3:45.40 with a lineup that featured sophomore Myonica Jackson (Bolingbrook, Ill.), sophomore Micah Trusty (Philadelphia, Pa.), freshman Olivia Allen (Kingwood, Texas) and fifth year Madison Martinez (Gahanna, Ohio).
