Box Score OMAHA, Neb. – The Villanova University baseball team dropped its series finale to Creighton, 12-3, on Sunday (April 27) at Charles Schwab Field. Right fielder
Jake McElroy posted his first multi-hit game since Feb. 23 with a pair of base hits and an RBI in the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a pair of scoreless innings to start the game, Creighton (28-12, 9-3 BIG EAST) got on the board with back-to-back RBI triples to take a 2-0 lead in the third.
The Wildcats (20-20, 4-8 BIG EAST) put a runner in scoring position to answer the Bluejays run, but a double play ended the inning prematurely, keeping the score at 2-0.
Creighton tacked on another run in the bottom half of the fourth frame to increase its lead to 3-0. The Bluejays slashed another RBI triple in the bottom of the fifth to score another run. Later in the fifth, a throwing error on a double steal attempt scored Creighton's fifth run.
Villanova finally got on the board in the top of the seventh inning with a
Josue Valdez RBI single.
Collin Quintano and
Jake McElroy drove in runs on the ensuing at bats, cutting the Wildcats' deficit to 5-3.
The Bluejays answered with six runs in the bottom half of the seventh, effectively putting the game out of reach. Creighton added one more run in the eighth, increasing its lead to 12-3.
The Wildcats could not muster another comeback effort in the ninth, securing the 12-3 win for Creighton. Starter Wilson Magers earned the win for the Bluejays, while Villanova starter
Bobby Olsen fell to 1-4 with the loss. Ian Koosman earned the save.
