Weekly Wrap: Villanova Announces Top Performers for the Week September 28-October 4

VILLANOVA, Pa. – This was another week chock full of events for Villanova athletics with 12 events across nine sports. Volleyball welcomed October with back-to-back home wins in straight sets against Providence and UConn. Women's Soccer earned two wins of their own, including their first against Georgetown since 2012. Field Hockey got a win over Georgetown as well, and Golf had a top 10 finisher in the UConn Invitational. Men's Cross Country sent two runners to the historic Paul Short Run, while both Men's and Women's Tennis competed in the Philadelphia area. Men's Cross Country
Brian Theobald
Senior/Wall, N.J.
 
Theobald placed 37th in the open race at the Paul Short Run. The senior ran 25:46.4 in the blazing heat to complete his first eight-kilometer race of the season. His time was a huge improvement upon his personal best, finishing 32 seconds faster than the career best time he ran at Paul Short last year.
 
 
Field Hockey
Gemma Lysaght
Senior/Back/Christchurch, New Zealand
 
Lysaght was one of three Villanova goalscorers on the weekend, as she found the back of the net against Georgetown. She netted the third and final goal for the Wildcats off a pass from Molly Zimmerman early in the third quarter. The goal marked Lysaght's 20th point of the season, tying her for the team lead. She tallied nine total shots on the weekend, four against Georgetown and five against Penn.
 
 
Football
Isaiah Ragland
Junior/Running Back/Alexandria, Va.
 
Ragland scored a career-high three rushing touchdowns against Morgan State. He scored the first two touchdowns for the Wildcats, finding the end zone with a two-yard rush in the first and a 13-yard run in the second. His third score capped off a 97-yard drive, giving Villanova the lead in the fourth quarter with a 22-yard run. He totaled 118 yards from scrimmage, amounting to 76 on the ground and a career-high 42 receiving yards.
 
 
Golf
Vibhav Alokam
Junior/Ypsilanti, Mich.
 
Vibhav Alokam paced the Wildcats at the UConn Invitational with his first top 10 finish of the season. He finished tied for ninth with a score of 147 (+4) over two rounds. His second round score of 71 (-1) vaulted him 16 spots on the leaderboard, and was also the fifth best in the field for the round.

 
Men's Soccer
Alex Yagudayev
Junior/Goalkeeper/Brooklyn, N.Y.
 
Yagudayev was a force guarding the net for Villanova against Connecticut. The junior stopped 14 shots on goal and limited the Huskies offense to only one score. Yagudayev made a series of great saves in the first half that helped keep the Huskies off the scoreboard for some time.  
 
 
Women's Soccer
Avrie Nelsen
Sophomore/Forward/Dix Hills, N.Y.
 
Nelsen earned three points across Villanova's wins over Creighton and Georgetown, which earned her the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week award. The sophomore netted the game's only goal against Georgetown, giving the 'Cats a pivotal win. In the 12th minute Dez Zapata sped past a pair of Hoya defenders and drew the goalkeeper out, which Nelsen used to her advantage to move into open space to knock her teammate's pass into the wide-open net. Against Creighton, she assisted Kaydee Amorosa's opening goal in the 13th minute, earning her second helper of the season.
 
 
Men's Tennis
Ethan Carr
Senior/Birmingham, Ala.
 
Carr earned three wins at the Saint Joseph's Invitational, advancing in both the singles and doubles tournaments. He reached the semifinals in the grey singles draw, defeating Jakob Gaudreau Barns of Saint Joseph's and Francis Alexander Lendvay Thoresen of Swarthmore in two sets each. He and Will Monahan reached the quarterfinals in the doubles draw, defeating Adam Bain and Jonah Chernett of Penn 6-3.
 
 
Women's Tennis
Jenna Stevens
Senior/Chicago, Ill.
 
Jenna Stevens earned a win in singles match at the Villanova Invitational. She beat Lara Russiniello of Delaware in three sets, winning 6-4, 3-6, 10-2. She also competed in an additional singles match against Temple along with two doubles matches across the two day event.
 
 
Volleyball
Taylor Lewis
Junior/Outside Hitter/Indianapolis, Ind.
 
Lewis contributed in all facets to help push Villanova to straight-set wins over both Providence and UConn. She totaled 15 kills on the weekend, earning points in key spots in each match to gain and strengthen Villanova's momentum. Defensively, she tallied two blocks and 12 digs, which included a career-high eight against Providence.
