Box Score 2 CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Villanova University baseball team wrapped up its three-game series at Charleston Southern on Saturday, March 14, with a doubleheader. The Wildcats split the twin bill, earning a 5–0 shutout victory in game one before falling 22–4 in the nightcap.
GAME 1 – Villanova 5, Charleston Southern 0
Scoreless Start
The opening two innings of game one featured a strong pitching duel, as both teams struggled to get their offenses going. Neither lineup reached base in the first inning, with both sides going down in order.
Villanova recorded the first hit of the game in the second inning when
Carter Richey lined a single. However, the Buccaneers quickly erased the threat by turning a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
Graduate student
Jack Kelley got the start for the Wildcats and matched the early pitching battle, retiring Charleston Southern in order in the second inning. Through the first two frames, both teams remained scoreless.
Wildcats Break Through
Villanova broke through in the third inning, plating three runs to take the early lead.
Mark Gialluisi started the rally with a base hit to the outfield. After
JoJo Montgomery and
Jack Roventini were each hit by pitches, the Wildcats loaded the bases with no outs. Sophomore
Austin Lemon brought home the first run on a fielder's choice, allowing Gialluisi to score.
The Wildcats added two more runs later in the inning.
Brayden Leonard delivered an RBI double to left field to extend the lead, and
Collin Quintano followed with a sacrifice fly to cap the three-run frame.
Villanova added another run in the fourth inning when Lemon recorded his second RBI of the day on another fielder's choice, bringing home Gialluisi to make it 4–0.
Kelley Dominant on the Mound
Kelley was outstanding on the mound for Villanova, keeping the Buccaneers off balance throughout his outing. The graduate student carried a one-hit shutout into the sixth inning and allowed just two hits overall while striking out seven.

Insurance Run
Holding a 4–0 lead in the seventh inning, Villanova added an insurance run. After
Brayden Leonard singled with two outs, senior
Michael Whooley drove a ball into the left-center field gap to bring Leonard home and extend the lead to 5–0.
Bobby Finn closed out the game for the Wildcats, tossing the final three innings to preserve the shutout and secure the victory in game one.
GAME 2 – Charleston Southern 22, Villanova 4
Buccaneers Jump Ahead Early
Unlike the first game, Charleston Southern's offense got off to a fast start in game two. The Buccaneers scored six runs in the opening inning despite recording only two hits.
CSU drew five walks or hit-by-pitches during the frame and capitalized on a Villanova error, which allowed two additional runs to score.
Buccaneers Continue to Add On
Charleston Southern extended its lead in the second inning with an RBI single from Ethan Reader to make it 7–0.
The Buccaneers added two more runs in the third inning on a solo home run and an RBI single. In the fourth inning, CSU went deep again, this time for a three-run homer that pushed the lead to 12–0.
Wildcats Respond with the Long Ball
Villanova got on the board in the fifth inning with a pair of solo home runs.
Collin Quintano led off the inning with a home run to left field, his fifth of the season. Later in the inning,
Tim Schuler added a solo shot to left for his first home run of the year.
CSU Answers
Charleston Southern responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. A double to left field started the scoring, and Barile later drove in two runs with a single. A passed ball accounted for the final run of the inning as the Buccaneers extended their lead.
Wildcats Add Two More
Villanova scored twice more in the sixth inning. Quintano recorded his second RBI of the day with a single as part of a three-hit performance, and Toole followed with a single through the left side to score
Jake Bollin.
