Hampden, Mass. — Villanova Golf traveled to New England to compete at the UConn Invitational at GreatHorse Golf Course. The Wildcats placed 12th in the 36-hole competition, shooting 616 (+40). Rhode Island won the tournament shooting 578 (+2). The Rams also had the individual winner, as Tony Liu shot seven under par. The tournament was originally supposed to be a three-day, 54-hole tournament, but persistent rain and water on the course caused a cancelation of competition on the second day.
Vibhav Alokam paced the Wildcats with his first top 10 finish of the season; finishing tied for ninth by shooting 147 (+4). His second round score of 71 (-1) vaulted him 16 spots on the leaderboard. His score was the fifth best in the field.
The number two ranked Wildcat was
Evan Rohde. He shot 154 (+10), placing him 47
th. The freshman shot 78 (+6) in round one and followed that up with a 76-shot round two.
Nathan Marion and
Luke Leonard were the next two Villanova finishers. Marion shot 157 (+13) to place 66
th, and Leonard placed 74
th and shot 158 (+14).
Cameron Besaw was Villanova's final team competitor, finishing 83
rd. The junior finished in 185 strokes, resulting in 21 over par. He shot 83 (+11) in round one, and 82 (+10) in round two.
Michael Block made his Wildcat debut competing as an individual. The senior shot 154 (+10) in his collegiate debut, resulting in a 47
th place finish. Block shot 76 (+4) in his first round on Sunday, and 78 (+6) in round two on Tuesday.
The Wildcats get two weeks off until getting back on the course to compete in the SHU Fall Classic. Sacred Heart will host the tournament at Great River Golf Club from October 12-13.
