Box Score PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – The Villanova Wildcats (18-11 overall, 6-9 BIG EAST) completed the weekend sweep of the Georgetown Hoyas (4-17 overall, 4-13 BIG EAST) on Sunday afternoon as they won 2-1 at Villanova Ballpark. The afternoon was highlighted by the pitching staff as
Devin Rivera (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) made his second career start and tossed six innings while only surrendering one run and striking out nine.
The Wildcats jumped out early when
Chris Rotondo (Redding, Conn.) led off the first inning with a single and worked his way around the bases by stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch.
Nick Lorusso (Monroe, Conn.) worked a full count before launching a deep fly ball to center field scoring Rotondo easily for the game's first run.
The Hoyas would threaten in the third inning when Andrew Bergeron led off with a double into right center. After
Devin Rivera picked up a strikeout, Bergeron swiped third base, but the freshman stayed poised and closed the inning with a strikeout and groundout to first base to escape the jam.
Villanova would give the rookie some insurance in the bottom of the fourth inning when
Ryan Toohers (Florham Park, N.J.) laced a single up the middle to open the inning.
Jack O'Reilly (Villanova, Pa.) would follow the single with a double into right center which scored Toohers and proved to be the difference. Georgetown would strike back for one in the next half inning, but Rivera escaped the jam by dotting a 3-2 fastball on the outside corner for a strikeout to end the inning.
In the seventh inning, the Wildcats turned to senior
Jimmy Kingsbury (Phoenixville, Pa.) to close out the game. The right-hander was sensational out of the bullpen striking out six of the nine batters he faced. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Hoyas pinch ran at first base and attempted to steal second base, but
Will Reiner (Madison, Conn.) fired down to second and nabbed the runner to end the game.
Villanova was led offensively by
Jack O'Reilly and
Sam Margulis (Pennington, N.J.) tallying multi-hit efforts. The Wildcats pitching staff earned 15 strikeouts while only allowing five hits on the afternoon. For the weekend, the Villanova hurlers only allowed five runs across 27 innings of work while fanning 39 Hoyas at the plate
Nolan McCarthy suffered the loss this afternoon after throwing seven innings and allowing two runs while striking out six. The Hoyas were led offensively by Andrew Bergeron picking up two hits.
