S. Orange, N.J.- The Villanova Wildcats snapped their five game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the Seton Hall Pirates on Friday afternoon. With the win Villanova moves to 18-25-1 overall and 8-8 in league action while the Pirates fall to 15-33 and 4-11 in BIG EAST play.
First pitch for game one of the three game series was delayed due to rain in South Orange. After 20 minutes
Connor Hale took the first pitch, a ball, to start things off. Graduate student
Chris Rotondo in the top of the first hit a triple to right center to get things going for the Villanova offense.
Joey Castellanos scored the outfielder on a single that went towards the pitcher to put the Wildcats up 1-0.
Jack O'Reilly connected for the third straight hit, a single through the left side. Villanova's next two batters weren't able to capitalize on the pair of runners on base to leave it at 1-0.
Villanova's offense clicked again at the top of the 6
th to score two more runs. Rotando got on base to start when he was hit by a pitch. Castellanos tripled to right field to score Rotando to make it 2-0.
Jack O'Reilly took four straight balls and advanced to second during
John Whooley's at bat on a wild pitch. Whooley hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Castellanos to make it 3-0 Villanova.
Tyler Arella started on the mound against the Pirates and picked up his fifth win of the season. The left-handed pitcher went six innings, faced 27 batters, didn't allow a run and had two strike outs.
Cameron Mathes came in with two runners on in the bottom the seventh with no outs. The graduate student was able to get three straight outs to keep Seton Hall scoreless.
In the middle of the eighth the rain picked up again and the game went into its second rain delay that lasted just over 30 minutes. Seton Hall came out strong after the delay with four straight singles scoring two runs. Justin Scotto singled to right field to score Steve Grober from second and Jedier Hernandez singled up the middle to bring home Alex Clyde to make it 3-2.
Danny Wilkinson came in and struck out the next two batters to give the Wildcats a one run lead.
Seton Hall had the game tying run 90 feet away in the bottom of the ninth, but Wilkinson was able to get Clyde to ground out to the third baseman to make the final 3-2.
Villanova and Seton Hall will play two tomorrow to wrap up the weekend series. Game one is scheduled for 12:00 P.M. and game two 3:00 P.M.
