VILLANOVA, Pa. – Villanova head baseball coach
Kevin Mulvey announced on Friday a shift in roles for of two of his assistant coaches following the 2022 season.
Eddie Brown, a member of the staff since 2017 as Recruiting Coordinator and Assistant Coach, working with hitting and infield, will now serve as the Associate Head Coach.
Jabin Weaver, the group's pitching coach since 2020, will be adding Recruiting Coordinator to his role.
Since joining Villanova in 2017, Brown has helped the offense to substantial growth at the plate, hitting as high as a .346 slugging percentage and .358 on-base percentage during the 2022 season. In his tenure, 17 Wildcats have driven in at least 20 runs in a season with five reaching the 30 RBI threshold, three of those this past season alone. All-told, Villanova has batted its way to 476 extra-base hits in the last six seasons, averaging 53 doubles, 10 triples and 16 home runs under his tutelage.
Chris Rotondo was one of the most powerful bats in Brown's tenure, hitting the most career triples (15) and 10
th-most doubles (42) all while scoring the 12
th-most runs (139). Before him, Brown made an impact in his first season by assisting with the development of second baseman Todd Czinege who ended up being a 29th round pick of the Colorado Rockies in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft following that 2017 season.
Defensively, Brown has worked with talented Villanova infields that have worked at least a .960 fielding clip in five of his six seasons. Both Doug deMarrais and
Ryan Toohers were high-producing fielders for the group, logging the seventh and eighth-best career fielding percentages, respectively, at .993 and .988.
"We are extremely lucky to have Eddie as part of our program," Mulvey said. "I am grateful for all of his hard work, dedication and loyalty. He has elevated not only our players but all of our coaches, as well."
Since 2020, the work that Weaver has done with the pitchers has proven to be successful, aiding hurlers
Gordon Graceffo and
Jimmy Kingsbury through their final years in the Wildcat uniform and onto being drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals and Seattle Mariners, respectively, in the 2021 MLB Draft. Graceffo finished his Villanova career with the program's fourth-best career ERA (2.86) and third-best WHIP (1.193) while recording the best single-season WHIP in team history at 0.963 in 2021. Kingsbury closed his career with the ninth-best WHIP (1.328) through the 15
th-most innings pitched (238.2). Today, Graceffo is playing at the Double-A level with the Springfield Cardinals while Kingsbury is with the Mariners' Single-A affiliate Modesto Nuts.
Under Weaver's guidance, Wildcats on this year's roster alone have set their marks as leaders for the program's history.
Danny Wilkinson moved into fourth on the program's career saves list through three seasons with 15 while
Tyler Arella and
Devin Rivera have both tied for the third-most combined career shutouts (3). On the single-season side, Rivera's three combined shutouts in the 2022 campaign tied him for the most in program history with
Chic DeGaetano following closely behind in a tie for fourth-most with two.
Cole Patten sat down 77 batters throughout this past season marking the 16
th-most for the program.
"We are very excited to have Jabin take on this new responsibility as recruiting coordinator," Mulvey said. "We have confidence in his ability to move our program forward through identifying and acquiring future Wildcat student-athletes."
