A standout end for Villanova during his collegiate career, Ed Berrang went on to play in the NFL for the Washington Redskins, the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers. He is a 1949 graduate of Villanova and was inducted to the Varsity Club Hall of Fame in 1989.

Berrang first arrived on campus as a freshman for the Fall 1942 semester. He was a member of that year’s freshman football squad and was recognized for his strong play with the team. Following his freshman season, Berrang left school to join the United States Marine Corps during World War II and he was deployed in the Pacific during the war.

Upon his return to campus after the war, Berrang played the 1946 through 1948 seasons on the Wildcats varsity squad. As a senior in 1948 he was the team’s third leading receiver with 12 catches for 152 yards and three touchdowns. Villanova tallied the first bowl game victory in program history that year when it defeated Nevada, 27-7, in the Harbor Bowl in San Diego.

Villanova went 20-9-2 (.677) overall during Berrang’s three varsity seasons under the direction of Hall of Fame head coach Jordan Olivar. The 1946 team closed a 6-4 campaign with a 27-20 road win against Florida, while the 1947 squad recorded a 7-7 tie against Miami (Fla.) and the 1948 team opened the year with a thrilling 34-14 win over Texas A&M at Franklin Field. The team’s win over Nevada in the Harbor Bowl on January 1, 1949 followed a loss to Kentucky one year earlier in the Great Lakes Bowl in Cleveland.

Berrang played the 1949 through 1952 seasons in the NFL and saw action in 42 career games with 22 starts. His career totals included three interceptions and 10 fumble recoveries.
