John Higgins was a three-year varsity player for Villanova during the coaching tenure of Harry Stuhldreher. He was a part of teams that went 17-8-3 (.661) during his career. Higgins played from 1933-35 and is a 1936 graduate of the University. He was inducted to the Varsity Club Hall of Fame in 1995.
 
The years that Higgins played were successful ones for the Wildcats, who notched seven wins in both 1933 and 1935. Higgins was a sophomore on the 1933 squad which recorded a 15-6 win at South Carolina along with shutout victories over Gettysburg, Manhattan, Albright and Temple. Villanova outscored the opposition by an average margin of 18.0 points per game in rolling to a 7-2-1 record.
 
It was a similar story for the Wildcats two years later as Higgins was part of a 7-2 team his senior year. Villanova owned a 199-67 scoring advantage in nine games played and began the season with five consecutive shutouts over Penn Military College, Ursinus, Western Maryland, Bucknell and La Salle.
 
Higgins was involved in a number of activities on campus during his college years. The native of Hamden, Conn. played intramural basketball and baseball in addition to being a member of the ice hockey team. He played freshman football in 1932 before joining the varsity squad a year later. He was also in the Glee Club and the Connecticut Club. Higgins graduated with a degree in Economics.
