John Elash was a standout offensive lineman for Villanova teams which tallied a 21-9-1 (.694) during his career. He played for both John Gregory and Lou Ferry from 1969-71 and is a 1972 graduate of the University. He was inducted to the Varsity Club Hall of Fame in 2001.
 
A starter at center in all three of his collegiate seasons, Elash was part of a Wildcats offensive line which allowed the offense to average better than 25 points per game during his career while topping the 30-point mark in 13 of 31 games spanning the 1969-71 seasons. His first year as a starter in 1969 saw the team average 187.8 rushing yards and record 19 rushing touchdowns.
 
Ferry took over as Villanova head coach in 1970 and led the team to a 9-2 record. The offensive line was again a team strong point and the Wildcats averaged 395.4 yards of total offense while scoring 26.2 points per game. The season began with a road win over Maryland (21-3) and also featured impressive wins over Delaware, Navy and Temple. Villanova tallied its last in a string of four straight winning seasons in 1971 and finished the season with a 6-4-1 mark.
