Gene Schall was a two-time All-American for Villanova who went on to play in the major leagues with the Philadelphia Phillies.  He played for the Wildcats from 1989-91 and was inducted to the Varsity Club Hall of Fame in 2007.
 
Schall helped lead Villanova to the only two BIG EAST championships in program history in 1989 and 1991.  The 1989 team won a school-record 42 games, finishing the year 42-13 and advancing to the NCAA East Regional here the Wildcats won three games and came within one game of reaching the College World Series.  Villanova was 112-44-1 (.717) overall during Schall’s years on the team.
 
Among his many career accolades, Schall was an All-American during the 1989 and 1991 seasons.  He was an ABCA freshman team and third team All-American in 1989, and later earned first team All-America honors from both the ABCA and Baseball America in 1991.  Schall was the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year in 1989 and was a first team all-conference selection in both 1989 and 1991.
 
Schall ranks in the top 10 in school history in five different offensive categories, including second in career slugging percentage (.728) and third in batting average (.404).  He also ranked third with 35 career home runs, was seventh in on-base percentage (.479) and ninth in runs batted in (150).  Schall is the single-season record holder with a .484 batting average (75-for-155) and a .942 slugging percentage during the 1991 season.  He also pitched for the Wildcats and ranks second in school history with a .224 opponent batting average and third with a 1.207 career WHIP.  Despite making just 28 appearances and 14 starts on the mound, Schall is also tied for 11th in school history with 14 career wins.  He went 14-3 with a 3.80 ERA over 116.0 innings.
 
Following his collegiate career, Schall was a fourth round draft pick of the Phillies in 1991 and he went on to play 52 games in the major leagues during the 1995 and 1996 seasons.  Schall batted .252 with five doubles, two home runs and an .862 OPS at the game’s highest level.  He also appeared in more than 1,000 games in the minor leagues over 12 seasons, batting .285 with 1,030 hits, 551 runs scored, 652 runs batted in and 154 home runs.
