Gary Scott played for Villanova from 1987-89 during some of the best seasons in program history.  He developed into a highly-touted professional prospect who played in the major leagues with the Chicago Cubs.  Scott was inducted to the Varsity Club Hall of Fame in 2005.

One of the most prolific hitters in Wildcats history, Scott is also one of just six members of the baseball program to have his jersey (#21) retired.  He holds Villanova career records for home runs (42) and on-base percentage (.494), as well as single-season records for both home runs (20) and runs batted in (83) during the 1989 season.  Scott also tied the Wildcats record with 22 doubles in 1989.  He ranks in the top-10 in school history in nine different offensive categories.  Scott batted .448 (95-for-212) during the 1989 campaign, tallying the fourth-highest average for a single season in the Villanova record book and recording one of nine .400 seasons in school history (based on a minimum of 100 at-bats in a season).

Scott played in 153 games overall during his collegiate career and was a .393 hitter with a .494 on-base percentage and a .717 slugging percentage.  He had 191 runs scored and 183 runs batted in while amassing 46 doubles, four triples and 42 home runs.  He also drew 76 walks while striking out just 55 times in 685 plate appearances.

Scott was a two-time All-American for Villanova, earning ABCA freshman team honors in 1987 in addition to being named to the Baseball America second team in 1989.  He was also the 1989 BIG EAST Player of the Year and earned first team all-conference accolades in both 1988 and 1989.

Villanova went 109-53 (.673) during Scott’s years on the team, including a school-record 42 victories during the 1989 season.  The 1988 team won a BIG EAST regular season title, while the 1989 squad finished 42-13 and won the BIG EAST championship while advancing to the NCAA East Regional.  Villanova went 3-2 in regional play and came within one game of reaching the College World Series before falling to Miami.

Scott was a second round draft pick of the Chicago Cubs in 1989 and was the Cubs starting third baseman on Opening Day for the 1991 season.  He played parts of the 1991 and 1992 seasons in the major leagues, appearing in 67 games overall and hitting three home runs.  Scott appeared in 755 games in eight minor league seasons, batting .264 with 713 hits, 154 doubles, 59 home runs, 370 runs scored and 370 runs batted in.
