The first dominant player in Villanova softball history, Sandy Arena was the starting catcher in the program's inaugural season in 1977, leading the team in batting average (.500) and hits (18). She remains in the all-time Villanova top-10 for triples with six all time, maintaining a tie for the single game lead after two against Lehigh in 1979. Arena hit three home runs against Franklin & Marshall in 1977 for the program's single game-bests in home runs and total bases, drove in seven runs against Swarthmore to tie for the all-time single-game best and stole three bases against Widener in 1979, which remains a tie for the most in a single game. Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1990 as the first softball alum to receive the honor, she led the Wildcats in on-base percentage, slugging percentage, OPS and doubles in 1978. Arena ended her career by putting forth her career-best 24 runs scored, 21 hits and 25 RBI in her graduating season.
