Charles Stead competed in the sprints and jumps for Villanova from 1957-59.  He is a 1959 graduate and was inducted to the Varsity Club Hall of Fame in 1984.  To this day (as of 2018), he ranks seventh on the Wildcats all-time performance list in the high jump with a personal best of 2.06 meters.  Stead was the indoor IC4A champion in the high jump in 1957 and 1959, with Villanova also capturing the team title at the 1957 meet.

In addition to his success in the high jump, Stead was a four-time Penn Relays champion as part of several notable Wildcats relay teams.  He ran one of the 220 yard legs of the sprint medley relay in 1958, helping Villanova win a Championship of America title with a winning time of 3:22.5.  That mark was the 10th-fastest in school history in a sprint medley relay measured in yards.  Stead also was a member of mile relay champions at the Penn Relays three straight years from 1957-59.  He ran the second leg of the relay in 1957, led off in 1958 and took the third leg in 1959.
