A versatile player on the Wildcats defensive unit during his collegiate career, Michael Mahoney went on to sign a professional contract following his graduation. He played both outside linebacker and defensive end for Villanova from 1972-74 and is a 1975 graduate of the University. Mahoney was inducted to the Varsity Club Hall of Fame in 1998.
 
During his scholastic career Mahoney was a standout quarterback at Summit (N.J.) High School and set a school record with four touchdowns in a single game. He played exclusively on defense for the Wildcats however and was a part of teams that forced 119 turnovers in his three varsity seasons. Mahoney was described as a tough competitor who was completely dedicated to the game.
 
In each of Mahoney’s first two varsity campaigns the Villanova defense allowed fewer than 20 points per game while posting a positive turnover margin. His first season came in 1972 when the Wildcats were plus-five in the turnover department and forced 36 miscues by their opponents, including 20 interceptions and 16 fumble recoveries.
 
Mahoney had two interceptions in 1973 when the Wildcats season highlights included home wins over Cincinnati and Delaware. The defense forced 39 turnovers and Villanova ended the year plus-two in turnover margin while giving up a respectable 19.3 points per contest. Entering his senior season, Mahoney switched from outside linebacker to defensive end. He had one interception in 1974 and the defense forced 44 turnovers on the year.
 
An outstanding all-around athlete, the native of Summit, N.J. was a Business Administration major at Villanova.
