A three-year starter on defense during his collegiate career, Joe Makoid played nose guard for the Wildcats and recorded 150 career tackles from his sophomore through senior seasons. Makoid played for Villanova from 1977-80 and is a 1981 graduate with a degree in Business. He was inducted to the Varsity Club Hall of Fame in 2003.

During his freshman season in 1977, Makoid made the Wildcats dress roster for home games against Dayton and Delaware. By the middle of his sophomore campaign a year later, he was pushing for a starting role on the defensive line and wound up starting the final three games of the season. Makoid finished the 1978 campaign with 20 total tackles.

He would go on to start all 11 games as a junior in 1979 and recorded 76 total stops while being credited with two sacks and a pass breakup. Makoid’s highlights from the year included making 12 tackles in a win over Massachusetts and later in the year against Youngstown State. His two sacks came in consecutive wins over Holy Cross and Marshall.

In the spring prior to his senior year, a knee injury limited him and Makoid missed the spring game. He took back his starting spot in the Fall though and made 54 tackles in 1980 while recording a sack, a fumble recovery and his only career interception. Villanova went 6-5 in his final season and ended the year with a 23-7 win over a heavily favored Temple team. Victories over Boston College and Cincinnati were other highlights of the 1980 season.

Villanova’s defense was a strong point during Makoid’s career and the Wildcats forced 33 turnovers in each of the 1978 and 1979 seasons while posting a plus-11 turnover margin combined for the two years. During the 1980 season the Wildcats posted a winning record thanks in part to the defense giving up just 12.5 points per game and holding six of 11 opponents below 10 points.

Since his graduation Makoid has stayed close to Villanova Athletics, including as one of the founders and a longtime board member of the Villanova Football Club.
