A standout offensive tackle for the Wildcats, John Fry was the anchor of the team’s line and a senior captain. He played for Villanova’s varsity squad from 1964-66 and graduated in 1967. Fry was inducted to the Varsity Club Hall of Fame in 2001.

In his first season on the active roster in 1964, Fry helped the Wildcats go 6-2 under Hall of Fame coach Alex Bell. The team posted notable road wins at Toledo and Holy Cross in addition to shutout victories over Detroit and Delaware at home by identical 34-0 scores. Fry was part of an offensive line which allowed Villanova to average 212.5 rushing yards and 297.9 yards of total offense per contest. The team scored 24.1 points per game on the year.

Villanova’s offense averaged 247.0 total yards per game and scored 16.5 points per contest over the course of Fry’s career. After the team posted only one win in 1965, the Wildcats bounced back in Fry’s senior year in 1966 with a 6-3 record and impressive wins over Toledo, Delaware, Xavier and Boston College. It was a rebound year for the offense as well. Villanova topped 2,000 total yards on the year and got a strong season from quarterback Gerald Bellotti who threw for 824 yards.

Fry developed into a professional prospect at Villanova and spent time on the practice squads of his hometown Philadelphia Eagles and the San Diego Chargers. After his playing career ended, he worked in engineering manufacturing and later became an educator in 2002 as a teacher in Morristown, New Jersey. He later taught math, physics and chemistry at Ridge (N.J.) High School and was a member of the Bernards Township Board of Education where he chaired the policy committee and was on the finance board.

Fry stayed close to his football roots and coached at Ridge High School from 2005 to 2011.
