In the early years of the Villanova field hockey program Lisa Alderfer was one of the team’s first offensive stars. She was the first player in school history to score four goals in a game and played for teams that won 10+ games in three of her four collegiate seasons. Alderfer graduated from Villanova in 1981 and was inducted to the Varsity Club Hall of Fame in 1997.

At the time of her graduation Alderfer was ranked second in school history 34 career goals and 78 career points. Her best season came in 1978 when she and teammate Sandy Arena each recorded 15 goals, four assists and 34 points. The goal and point totals were single-season school records at the time. Alderfer had two career hat tricks and four career multi-goal games.

As a freshman in 1977 Alderfer was named to the US Field Hockey Association/AIAW National Field Hockey Tournament second team. She was recognized again with US Field Hockey Association second team honors as a sophomore in 1978.

In 1977, Alderfer became the first person in Villanova history to score four goals in a game when she achieved the feat in a 10-0 win over Harcum on September 29, 1977. Her eight points in that contest were also a school record at the time, and the marks would stand until Arena notched five goals in a game against Philadelphia Bible Institute the next season. In the same game that Arena scored five goals, Alderfer set a then-school record with 15 shots attempted in an 11-0 victory.

Villanova compiled a 35-24-7 (.583) record during Alderfer’s career, including the program’s first 12-win season in 1978 (12-6-2) and 10 wins in both the 1977 and 1980 campaigns. Alderfer was part of the Wildcats first two teams to earn postseason berths when Villanova played in the EAIAW Division II Championship in 1979 and 1980.

During the 1977 and 1978 regular seasons the Wildcats competed in the Philadelphia College Field Hockey Association Tournament. It was the first known in-season tournament action for Villanova, which played its first varsity season in 1973.
